An Analysis of Freelance Journalism Training in Spanish Universities from the Professionals' Perspective
Abstract
Freelance journalism is a form of employment shaped by the tension between the autonomy and precarity suffered by professionals who offer their services to several employers without a long-term commitment. As this self-employment strategy has experienced a great rise in the last years, our paper aims to study if the Spanish university offers a proper education to face the multiple challenges of the craft. In order to do so, we conducted 21 semi-structured interviews with freelance journalists. Results highlight a clear disconnection between degrees and the reality of the industry. Also, professional’s testimonies reveal the need to boost some concrete contents, such as ethics and business, and the importance to take a more practical approach in order to offer a humanistic education, but also to develop the necessary skills to perform freelance journalism.
