Abstract

The article analyses the academic social networks, Academia and Mendeley, studying their origins, purposes and ways of functioning as well as their use and expansion among professors and researchers from different areas of knowledge. A descriptive approach is made to the concept of academic social network and its implantation in the scientific community as one of the basic tools that the researcher uses to document and disseminate their work. In the methodology used, of a qualitative-quantitative nature, the methods of observation systematized, and the case study have been chosen. For the theoretical and conceptual framework have been accessed articles, studies, reports, definitions and references of the websites of the platforms studied in order to have a basis on which to interpret situations and develop more extensive research. The result obtained allows us to know the public to whom they are directed, the level of use and the various utilities in the field of research.
