Abstract

This article analyzes the common factors and characteristics present in a sample (n = 700) of journalistic texts about science published in the online editions of three leading Spanish-speaking newspapers (La Nación from Argentina, El País from Spain and El Universal from Mexico) in 2010, 2012 and 2014. A quantitative content analysis measures the main common characteristics in terms of topics covered, sources consulted as well as multimedia resources and rhetorical figures used. Likewise influence of these on the number of comments and their virality on Twitter is evaluated. Results point out a tendency towards the personalization of scientific news, where the authority of the traditional circuits -journals and institutions- begins to be displaced by the presence of scientists as direct personal sources. On the other hand, it is verified that thematic attention has shifted from health towards the natural sciences.
