The media discourse about the inevitability of the crisis: a metaphorical explanation of the economy
Abstract
This study analyzes news and editorials published by the newspapers El Mundo and El País, to show how these media related the crisis of 2008. The analysis shows that both media presented the crisis as an unavoidable fact, as if it were a natural phenomenon or a disease, by the metaphorical language used by them in their news and editorials. A crisis presented as inevitable by these two newspapers, although both have, initially, a different editorial line and in the collective imagination, represent a different political ideologies. However, we can’t forget that El Mundo and El País are property of multinational corporations (financial, automobile, telecommunications, etc.), whose interests would be, ultimately, the source of discourse about the inevitability of crisis.Downloads
