Beyond the Blood: Revictimization Processes and Sensationalist Journalism
Abstract
Diario Extra is a Costa Rican newspaper known for its sensationalist trend. The femicide news have a tonic in which the victim is “re-victimized”: the elements of the news show a very vulnerable person. This paper Studies this discursive manifestation in the news of Diario Extra during the year 2011. An initial collection of 117 articles was made, of which 44 correspond to murders and violations without a clear motive by the perpetrator of the crime. So, 5 articles were selected to analyze in depth how the re-victimization process functions. The results show that these processes make use of semiotic resources to achieve an emotional appeal to the reader, exaggerating the crime in all the cases.
