SelfReference in Television Newscasts: Promotional Strategies in the Spanish Newscasts

Abstract

Selfreference messages have become common in the main Spanish television networks (La 1, Tele 5, and Antena 3). The use of the selfreference practice makes clear that the television newscasts are not free from the autopromotion and media strategies that main networks perform. In this article, the selfreference messages are described, and the main objectives targeted by networks by broadcasting them are analyzed. Moreover, we report the presence of news hiding selfpromotion that has contaminated television newscasts.
