How do my students pronounce? A theoretical review of key issues in the acquisition and learning of the phonological component in early childhood education

Keywords: didactics of phonology, phonological acquisition, child language, phonological processes

Abstract

The acquisition of the phonic component is a complex process, characterised by its evolutionary and peculiar nature, in which the child’s phonic system is shaped and which is usually manifested through phonological processes. Likewise, phonological learning during the early childhood education stage tends to focus only on the correct pronunciation of phonemes and on working on phonological awareness because of its relevance for the development of reading and writing, ignoring other essential phonological aspects. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to carry out a theoretical review of the main issues affecting the development and learning of phonology, in order to defend the importance of a didactics of phonology committed to the intrinsic value of children’s language and its diversity in the training of future early childhood teachers.
