Sociolinguistic Competence in German as a Foreign Language: Language, Migration and Language Awareness
Abstract
One of the learning objectives established in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is the development of sociolinguistic competence in foreign language learners. The aim of this competence is for learners to make correct social use of the target language, being aware of the different language varieties and registers that form the language and of the social dimensions that appear in it. The aim of this paper is to foster sociolinguistic competence in learners of German as a foreign language through the examination of the linguistic variety of the German multiethnolect. On one hand, the origin, development, and social implications of the multiethnolect will be shown. On the other hand, the benefits of introducing this variety in the classroom will be discussed and guidelines for its teaching will be established.
