Needs and skills of dictionary use in Secondary Education
Abstract
This research aims to know the needs and skills of dictionary use in Compulsory Secondary Education in an autonomous Spanish city. To this end, with a sample of 215 students from two schools, public and subsidised, an empirical-analytical methodology was used with an ex-post-facto descriptive study, completed with a correlational inferential statistic. The instrument was a questionnaire with three scales: the first and the third, respectively, related to the needs and skills of use of the dictionary, and the second measured the teacher performance regarding this resource. The main result highlights the insufficient use of this resource by students and teachers; significant differences have been found according to variables sex, level attended and type of school. The female sex, the 1st year of ESO and the subsidised school stand out with better results.
