Abstract

This paper outlines strategies that parents and/or care-givers can employ at home to promote early linguistic ability in kindergarten and first-grade children and facilitate beginning reading skills. The strategies are designed such that parents may obtain the greatest competency in and understanding of how to best develop linguistic ability in children by utilizing short stories. This paper details fundamental theories and outlines practical guidelines necessary to establishing a home environment rich in literary and linguistic experiences.
