Abstract

This paper aims to explore the situation of the Chinese borrowings in current Spanish based on data obtained from multiple Spanish dictionaries and textual corpora. We introduce the term sinismo and a proposal for classification based on the definition of Spanish lexical borrowing of Gómez Capuz (2004), as well as the inclusion criteria formulated by Cannon (1988) on the Chinese borrowings in English. The quantitative analyses carried out from a morphology, semantic, labeling, introduction date and source language perspective show that: a) nouns constitute the majority of this word set, which mainly involve contexts related to China or Asia; b) most of the Chinese borrowings are used in both Peninsular and American Spanish; c) the number of Chinese borrowings keeps growing in Spanish since the 16th century; d) Mandarin is the most important source language and the graphic form of sinismos is increasingly influenced by pinyin.
