Movement in the work of Ángel Ferrant: from combinatorial composition to graphic dynamism
Abstract
Ángel Ferrant (1890-1961) is a key figure of the avant-garde in Spain, for the quality of his artistic production, the influence he exerted on others, his contacts with some important international renovation movements and, also, his prominent role as a reformer of the national artistic pedagogy. This article explores how the sculptor picks up the ideas about dynamism that were common in the art world during the first three decades of the s. XX and how he transfers them to his own work. To this end, we review his links with Italian Futurism and with the teaching of Steinhof in Austria, as well as his friendship with Calder and Miró. However, even starting from the same theoretical bases, Ferrant explores the movement in very different ways in his artwork, some of them so personal that they are possibly unique in the historical period of his life.
