An approach to her textile works as living sculptures 2025-06-27T08:08:14+00:00 Amalia Cross amalia.cross@pucv.cl
The objective of this article is to reflect, from an art historical perspective, on the textile work of Chilean artist Ester Chacón-Ávila (b. 1936) through an investigation of her works in collections and archives in Barcelona, Paris, and Santiago de Chile. It proposes an approach focused on the creation of her living sculptures as art actions inscribed in a historical context marked by the civil-military dictatorship in Chile and exile in France during the 1980s. To this end, we will address her knot-working technique, drawing on a hybridization of practices, disciplines, and knowledge, in collaboration with other artists through the medium of body and movement. This will shed light on her place in art history and her connection to a Latin American tradition that understands textiles as a living entity. Based on these aspects, we propose a first reading of the work of an under-regarded artist who is a key reference for experimental and performative textile art. Finally, this article hopes to contribute to the study of textile art by women and the different ways in which art relates to political protests, from exile during the dictatorship in Chile.
2025-10-08T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2025 Arte, Individuo y Sociedad https://revistas.ucm.es/index.php/ARIS/article/view/101453 Art, activism and education: a school human chain in response to the Prestige oil spill 2025-07-23T10:23:23+00:00 Miguel A. Rodríguez-González miguelanxo.rodriguez@usc.es
A human chain formed by thousands of schoolchildren was deployed along the Galician coast in January 2003, as part of the social mobilization related to the Prestige oil spill. This action was part of the social response to the management of the oil spill crisis, where aesthetics often intertwined with social and environmental activism. In this text, we embrace the aesthetic potential of dissent and understand the action as a major collective performance. We begin by researching materials from newspaper archives and scientific articles, analyze the context and the agents involved, and then propose an analysis of the implications for the fields of environmental education and critical pedagogy.
2025-10-08T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2025 Arte, Individuo y Sociedad https://revistas.ucm.es/index.php/ARIS/article/view/101551 Modulated geometry. Analysis of the working process in the sculpture of Robert Ferrer 2025-06-09T06:56:36+00:00 Gonzalo Sotelo-Calvillo gonzalo.sotelo@upm.es Teresa Raventós-Viñas traventos@ceu.es
This study investigates the working process of sculptor Robert Ferrer i Martorell, focusing on aspects such as module, rhythm, and symmetry as geometric principles that structure his work. Through the graphic analysis of five sculptures created between 2019 and 2023, the study examines the evolution of the formal language and design methodology employed by the artist. The research combines Ferrer’s testimony with theoretical references and provides a detailed graphic study of the selected pieces. Drawing serves as a research tool to reconstruct the steps followed during Ferrer's creative process.

The analysis demonstrates how Ferrer employs operations such as repetition, rotation, and the displacement of modules as compositional strategies that engage in dialogue with various artistic movements, including Constructivism, Neoplasticism, and Kinetic Art. Furthermore, his exploration of space and materiality establishes a connection between his work, architecture, and the viewer’s perception. The findings help to clarify Ferrer’s oeuvre, conceptualised as a plastic investigation that combines geometric rigor with sensory experimentation, thereby contributing to the use of the module as a means of constructing space in contemporary art.
2025-10-08T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2025 Arte, Individuo y Sociedad https://revistas.ucm.es/index.php/ARIS/article/view/101746 The Artistic Audiovisual Expression as a Tool for Teacher Training: An Experience Using Stop-Motion Techniques 2025-06-10T06:53:41+00:00 Olga Leyva-Gutiérrez olgaleyva10@correo.ugr.es Xana Morales-Caruncho xana.morales@unir.net Pedro Chacón-Gordillo pchacon@ugr.es
This research in the field of Art Education Methodology explores the use of an artistic-creative process as an inquiry tool. It is a qualitative case study involving 54 students from the Primary Education Degree program at the University of Granada. During the study, participants produced 14 stop-motion animations reflecting on Sustainable Development Goal 13, focused on adopting measures to combat climate change. The main objective was to analyze the topics selected by future teachers to address the climate crisis and to assess their ability to create a stop-motion art piece with both formal and conceptual quality. Results showed that the most common topics were atmospheric and land pollutants, such as cobalt extraction, transportation methods, and plastic waste. In conclusion, future teachers succeeded in producing high-quality pieces, and the experience helped raise their awareness of the cognitive potential of Art Education. This creative process proved to be an effective tool for fostering reflection and learning about current environmental issues.
2025-10-08T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2025 Arte, Individuo y Sociedad https://revistas.ucm.es/index.php/ARIS/article/view/101953 Spanish anti-Franco artists. In other words, within the framework of this commitment to democratization, artothèques emerged, a type of art library that gave rise to an interesting collection of contemporary art alongside others that emerged in parallel in the region, all of which ended up being integrated into the Musée-Frac Occitanie. This research offers a new approach to the study of the art of exile in France, seeking to understand how the transition from the resistance to the museum took place and what were the ways to access it.
2025-10-08T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2025 Arte, Individuo y Sociedad https://revistas.ucm.es/index.php/ARIS/article/view/101958 Cultural Resistance and Collaboration: Espais Valencians d’Art Associats (EVAA) as a Model of Self-Management 2025-06-10T11:14:34+00:00 Ángel M. Rodríguez-Arias anrodar3@bbaa.upv.es Juan B. Peiró-López jbpeiro@upv.es
This article examines the Espais Valencians d’Art Associats (EVAA), a network of six independent spaces redefining models of artistic creation and exhibition in Valencia and its metropolitan area. Through thematic analysis, it addresses key issues such as the relationship with place, management models, curatorial processes, and the community networks that sustain these initiatives. The study is based on a qualitative methodology combining interviews with managers and artists, visits to the spaces, and a literature review that reflects on the role of traditional institutions, alternative models of artistic legitimation, and curatorial dynamics in self-managed contexts. The findings highlight how these projects subvert the traditional dynamics of the market and artistic institutions, prioritizing self-management, experimentation, and connection with their immediate environments. Among the main results, the study identifies practices that reconfigure the relationship between work and context, foster new spatial narratives, and strengthen collaborative networks. Additionally, it analyzes how these spaces address structural precariousness and the tensions inherent in operating within a system dominated by capitalist logics. Ultimately, EVAA emerges as a model of cultural resistance, proposing viable and meaningful alternatives to the limitations of the contemporary art system.
2025-10-08T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2025 Arte, Individuo y Sociedad https://revistas.ucm.es/index.php/ARIS/article/view/102023 Education and citizen participation as strategic tools in the conservation of cultural heritage in Spain: a review of the current state of national and regional legislation 2025-07-16T11:28:13+00:00 Alejandra López-Mera gladysalejandra.lopez@uva.es Pablo de Castro-Martín pabloluis.castro@uva.es Olaia Fontal-Merillas olaia.fontal@uva.es
This article reviews national and regional legislation in Spain concerning cultural heritage, with a particular focus on provisions related to the educational sphere and citizen participation. Through a detailed analysis, it examines legislative developments and processes that recognize these dimensions as strategic tools to ensure the conservation of heritage and the transmission of its cultural value and historical legacy to present and future generations. The study reveals that, although some recent laws have begun to incorporate explicit references to education and citizen participation, other regulations still overlook these aspects. This disparity highlights a significant gap in the implementation of educational programs and projects—both in formal and non-formal contexts—which considerably limits the success of initiatives aimed at cultural preservation through education. In response to this situation, the article proposes recommendations for future legislative updates, grounded in research that supports the inclusion of concrete measures. It advocates for the promotion of inclusive citizen participation that encompasses all age groups and environments, placing education at the core of efforts to safeguard and enhance cultural heritage.
2025-10-08T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2025 Arte, Individuo y Sociedad https://revistas.ucm.es/index.php/ARIS/article/view/102404 The reception of the Spanish film canon on television. The case of Historia de nuestro cine (Televisión Española, 2015-2018) 2025-09-09T07:44:28+00:00 Ana Mejón amejon@hum.uc3m.es Rubén Romero-Santos rrsantos@hum.uc3m.es
The elaboration of a national film canon is a complex process involving different actors. Among them, it is worth mentioning the participation of the media, either in their role as prescribers or disseminators. The present research aims to analyze the changes produced in the Spanish film canon in the last thirty years and its reception by the public. First, we analyze the two most important attempts to create a Spanish film canon with the participation of the specialized film press in 1995 and 2016. Secondly, we deal with the variations in it motivated both by the rediscovery of films that were difficult to access and the influence of academic currents in the reevaluation of periods and authors. Then, both canons are compared with the public reception of Historia de nuestro cine (TVE, 2015-2018). It is concluded that, despite being a dynamic process, the audience is reluctant to modifications in the canon. Finally, the emergence of social networks as a new instrument to be taken into account in future reformulations is pointed out.
2025-10-08T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2025 Arte, Individuo y Sociedad https://revistas.ucm.es/index.php/ARIS/article/view/102556 Articulation between digital museum management and creative economy for the universal accessibility of afro-matancero heritage 2025-07-10T07:21:44+00:00 Tamara Hernández-Manso tamyhm23@gmail.com Guillermo A. Jiménez-Pérez guillermo941019@gmail.com
This article presents the conception of a digital entrepreneurship project focused on the museum management of Afro-Matancero cultural heritage, articulating digital technology and the creative economy. Its main objective was to design a business model for the Afro-Matancero Digital Museum, focused on the digitization of heritage to promote its universal accessibility, under the principles of inclusion, sustainability, and local development. The research, with a qualitative approach and exploratory-descriptive design, was conducted between November 2024 and April 2025 in key spaces such as the San Severino Castle Museum, the African Art Gallery, and the Historic Center of Matanzas (Cuba). Through participant observation, interviews, case studies, and documentary review, a digital ecosystem was conceived, comprising an interactive platform with educational resources (Afro-Matancero Living Memory), 3D recreations, a social media presence, collection digitization, and augmented and virtual reality applications. The results project the development of digital skills in communities and museums, as well as the definition of specialized professional profiles for this work. It is concluded that the presented model promotes innovative, sustainable heritage management with socioeconomic impact, positioning Afro-Cuban culture as an educational, tourism, and productive resource.
2025-10-08T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2025 Arte, Individuo y Sociedad https://revistas.ucm.es/index.php/ARIS/article/view/102890 Creative processes around playful memory. An exercise of playful contemplation and active visual participation of the playable space is carried out from the mechanics linked to the sound and photographic record. We approach Season: A Letter to the future (Scavengers Studio, 2023), Dordogne (Un Je Ne Sais Quoi and Umanimation, 2023) and Natsu-Mon: 20th Century Summer Kid (Toybox and Millennium Kitchen, 2024), video games whose mechanics push the player to document nostalgia and memory through a photographic and sound exercise thanks to the environmental narrative. We adopt a methodology close to game studies and filmic narrative, using the resources provided by ludonarrative analysis and the constructive capacity of the documentary. The results reveal the creative capacity obtained by the player as a narrative construction agent within the story in the ludonarrative world, revealing a unique and irreplicable look within each game in the videoludic object and the documentary experience acquired from the primary mechanics.
2025-10-08T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2025 Arte, Individuo y Sociedad https://revistas.ucm.es/index.php/ARIS/article/view/103198 Transnational networks of Italian sculpture in the Chilean space (19th–20th centuries) 2025-10-08T15:26:18+00:00 Noemi Cinelli ncinelli@ull.edu.es
In this paper, we analyze the role of cultural mediation played by Italian sculpture in Chile between 1829 and 1929. Based on a transnational approach, we examine the artistic circulation networks that connected Italy and Chile, highlighting how sculpture became a privileged vehicle for the transmission of visual repertoires, techniques, and symbolic values. Our research focuses on the macro-areas identified as the main channels for the diffusion of Italian sculpture in America, adapted here to the Chilean case: public monuments, sacred, funerary and industrial sculpture, education, museums, and exhibitions. Drawing on primary sources gathered from archives in both countries, we consider sculpture as a form of symbolic and cultural agency capable of articulating national identities and collective memories. According to our interpretation, Italian sculpture, far from being understood merely as an artistic object, functioned as a vehicle of modernity and cultural legitimation, contributing to the construction of new national narratives in nineteenth-century post-independence Chile.
2025-10-08T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2025 Arte, Individuo y Sociedad https://revistas.ucm.es/index.php/ARIS/article/view/103112 Meditaciones estéticas.
