The reception of the Spanish film canon on television. The case of Historia de nuestro cine (Televisión Española, 2015-2018)
Abstract
The elaboration of a national film canon is a complex process involving different actors. Among them, it is worth mentioning the participation of the media, either in their role as prescribers or disseminators. The present research aims to analyze the changes produced in the Spanish film canon in the last thirty years and its reception by the public. First, we analyze the two most important attempts to create a Spanish film canon with the participation of the specialized film press in 1995 and 2016. Secondly, we deal with the variations in it motivated both by the rediscovery of films that were difficult to access and the influence of academic currents in the reevaluation of periods and authors. Then, both canons are compared with the public reception of Historia de nuestro cine (TVE, 2015-2018). It is concluded that, despite being a dynamic process, the audience is reluctant to modifications in the canon. Finally, the emergence of social networks as a new instrument to be taken into account in future reformulations is pointed out.
