Childism in the global south: a latin american perspective

Deadline for article submissions: December15, 2026

Co-editors: John Wall, Monique Voltarelli. Childism Institute

In recent decades, the field of childhood studies has made significant contributions to understanding children and adolescents as social, cultural, and political subjects, challenging traditional perspectives that reduced them to objects of protection, socialization, or development. This paradigmatic shift has made it possible to recognize childhood as a social category structured by power relations, inequalities, and generational hierarchies. However, despite these advances, deep and naturalized forms of subordination of younger people persist, limiting their participation, autonomy, and recognition as subjects of rights.

ECHOES OF INTERSECTIONAL CHILDHOOD STUDIES IN THE CAPITALOCENO

Deadline for article submissions: October 31, 2026

The journal Sociedad e Infancias invites you to participate in a Special Issue that is part of the K Reporters project, Reassembling politics across children’s culture to scale intersectional pedagogies. Through the exploration of children’s cultures, as well as the policies implemented for their well-being in contemporary societies, K Reporters seeks to recognize children’s agency and learn from their creative survival strategies, particularly their ways of managing distress and conflict. Aligned to this, intersectionality applied to critical childhood studies is conceived as “a counter-hegemonic praxis that seeks to challenge and displace hegemonic whiteness in the naming and legitimating of particular kinds of politics, policy-making, and knowledge production” (Konstantoni and Emejulu, 2017, p. 8).

Social representations of chilhood and adolescence: what´` s new?

Deadline for article submissions: July 15, 2026

The concept of social representation, understood as a form of socially constructed and elaborated knowledge, has become a strong theoretical foundation in childhood studies, particularly when exploring how images constructed by the adult world define what childhood and adolescence should be, both viewed as stages in the human life cycle. It also informs the expectations around what are considered appropriate, desirable, and expected behaviors of children and adolescents as they go through these stages. At the same time, the sociology of childhood has, since its inception, recognized that children are co-constructors of the realities of childhood and adolescence. Through their actions, they transform both the constructed frameworks, and the images projected onto them by society.
