Notions about power, politics and participation in groups of boys and girls of primary education in Querétaro (Mexico)

Keywords: political action, adultcentrism, politics of everyday life, indigenous childhoods

Abstract

Political research on childhood has focused mainly on girls and boy´s participation in initiatives promoted by the adult world and activities of social movements. This limits our understanding of the political action of girls and boys who are not part of these initiatives or contexts, as well as makes invisible the political dimensions of children´s daily lives. This article lays out a discussion regarding the meanings that girls and boys assign to the concepts of politics, power, and participation in order to investigate alternative definitions of politics from non-adult-centric logics, and beyond approaches exclusively focused on state and instrumental power. Data was gathered via questionnaires and drawings with girls and boys from a public elementary school in the city of Querétaro, México. The research contributes to critical studies of childhood by considering children’s possibilities for political action, seeing them as valid interlocutors to discuss social issues and problems of common interest.
