The Promotion of Reading for Migrant Adolescents in a Service-Learning Project: Analysis and Evaluation of the Experience
Abstract
The research examines the impact of a Service-Learning project, carried out in collaboration between students from the Master’s in Document Management, Libraries, and Archives at the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM), the Iván de Vargas Public Library of the Madrid City Council, and the Santa Bárbara Educational Center. The project’s focus was an "easy reading workshop" designed for migrant adolescents. The study aims to present this initiative and assess its impact on both the participants and the collaborating institutions. A variety of data sources were analyzed, including a survey with the adolescents, two interviews with representatives of the collaborating institutions, and a focus group with UCM students who participated in the project. The adolescent participants responded positively to the workshop, particularly valuing the opportunity to interact with individuals outside their usual academic environment. They noted personal growth and an increased connection with new people and settings beyond their daily routines. The collaborating institutions appreciated the added value the project brought to their regular activities, enhancing their offerings. For the UCM students, the project served as a meaningful extension of their classroom education, helping to develop key skills such as professional ethics, cultural competence, and reflective practice on diversity and inclusion. Additionally, it provided valuable experience in professional writing.
