Restaurant menu translation in a tourist destination: a case study
Abstract
Considering one of the most popular tourist attractions of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, i.e. the Las Canteras beach, there seems to be a mismatch between the presence of francophone tourists and the quality of restaurant menu translations into French. Field data have been collected to constitute the corpus of this study: 18 real menus in French and Spanish from beachfront restaurants. Methodologically, after defining the corpus, the text type under examination is described and the translations are analysed, focusing on the high frequency of culturemes that can be found in this type of text. The aim is to illustrate the translation techniques (or lack thereof), detect possible challenges and propose solutions, with the aim of ensuring that the translation truly contributes to conveying clearly the cultural reality of the tourist destination.
