Abstract

This paper presents an empirical study that seeks to determine the extent to which specialized translation students feel legitimized to question the ability of the expert. Eighteen Legal and Economic Translation students were asked to review four EN>ES translations of a distribution contract made by Spanish Commerce specialists. The subjects were divided into two groups: one who knew the translator's background and another who ignored it. Resulting data were quantitatively and qualitatively classified and analyzed according to error typologies, review strategies and motivations that lead the students to make improvements. The analysis carried out confirms differing tendencies based on the (non)awareness of the translator’s expert profile.
