Coverage of the phenomenon of disinformation in the Spanish press. An analysis of its evolution
Abstract
This article describes the treatment of disinformation in the Spanish press, based on an analysis of how it was covered in five general information newspapers between 2016 and 2022. The aim is to identify the framing strategy diachronically and indicate the main actors, journalistic sources, spaces and times referred to in the articles published on this question. The results confirm the evolution of the media agenda, since after the initial years when the majority of items were concerned with fake news and denials, this has given way to coverage in which more interpretative frames predominate, thus enabling the media to explain the causes of the rise of disinformation and point to measures, challenges and plans for combatting this phenomenon. All of this is addressed using a combined approach that underscores not only the media’s role as a watchdog, but also their contribution to media literacy.
