The perception of local communities about the communication of mining companies in crisis and post-crisis situations: the cases of Mariana and Brumadinho, in Brazil
os casos de Mariana e Brumadinho, no Brasil
Abstract
This article is part of the strategic communication studies associated with organisations’ communication in their relationship with local communities. A quantitative method is used with a questionnaire survey, applied to a probabilistic sample of strata, to assess the perception of local communities affected by the industrial disasters of Mariana and Brumadinho about communication in crisis and post-crisis situations undertaken by the companies that blame for the disasters. The results show that local communities attribute responsibility for the crisis to mining companies, refute their response strategies and do not trust the information provided by companies, which is reflected in the poor use of their media and communication channels as a source of information. The results also show that local communities prefer to resort to the media and the work of journalists to find out about disasters.
