Fake news and disinformation about migration in Spain: practices of xenophobic discourse in social networks and online media according to the platform Maldita Migración
Abstract
This paper takes as its object of study the fake news (disinformation) related to migration in Spain spread during the first half of 2022. The main objective is to analyze the presence of the migrant population in the misinformation identified by Maldita Migración, a fact-checking platform. The second objective is to categorize the type of misinformation applied in the analyzed content, quantify it and assess the level of misinformation and falsification. A qualitative content analysis is applied to 50 case studies. Based on the results obtained in the set of case studies analysed, quantitative tools are used in order to identify trends and regular practices. The results highlight the increase in the activity of the platform after the calling for elections in Andalusia. Disinformation contents insist on frequent disinformation arguments and strategies. In addition to spreading through social networks, supposedly informative complicit websites are identified.
