Loyalty and Animosity Between Football Fan Clubs in Spain: Málaga CF and Granada CF
Abstract
The aim of this research is to delve deeper into the concepts of loyalty and animosity in football at the regional level to establish a novel typification of their indicators. Through surveys carried out in person in two Andalusian cities (Malaga and Granada) with teams in the first division of the Professional Football League of almost one thousand fans in the 2016/17 season, we demonstrate the existence of a loyalty based on exclusivity and a classification of animosity based on dependent variables such as exclusivity, intensity, and directionality. The results show that there is a unique and shared loyalty and different types of animosity categorised in terms of those three variables at different levels among Málaga and Granada fans. Through the categorisation of the concepts, a model of analysis is proposed that can be implemented in different geographical areas.
