Using virtual reality as a communication tool for natural disasters: RTVC case on La Palma volcano erupción
Abstract
This paper analyzes the use and usefulness of Virtual Reality (VR) in the coverage of natural disasters, taking as an object of analysis the specific case of the Cumbre Vieja volcano on the island of La Palma. A natural disaster caused an emergency situation on September 19, 2021, and lasted for 85 days. This research aims to analyze the treatment and dissemination that the program 'Una Hora Menos' of Radio Televisión Canaria (RTVC), broadcast from Monday to Friday at 21.30 hours, dispensed to it. I will also focus on the social repercussion generated by the use of VR in the representation of the communication of the disaster, as well as the perception of the public opinion through the messages broadcasted in the social network Twitter.
