Spanish Artistic Heritage in the French Press (1936-1939). El Prado at war
Abstract
This work is dedicated to the treatment that the French press of the time gave to the destruction of the Spanish artistic heritage during the Civil War (1936-1939). Of all these media, the illustrated magazines have been studied in detail, since this fact had a prominent presence in their pages with the resource of graphic testimony as the main ingredient. In this context, the vicissitudes suffered by the Prado Museum, already then an international standard bearer of Spanish culture, take on great prominence. For the French press, regardless of their different ideological affinities, it was essential to stop the disaster and undertake protection and safeguard measures in this regard. So the immediate interest aroused by the Spanish war in French public opinion had a special section referring to this important loss of assets.
