Abstract

This work is dedicated to the treatment that the French press of the time gave to the destruction of the Spanish artistic heritage during the Civil War (1936-1939). Of all these media, the illustrated magazines have been studied in detail, since this fact had a prominent presence in their pages with the resource of graphic testimony as the main ingredient. In this context, the vicissitudes suffered by the Prado Museum, already then an international standard bearer of Spanish culture, take on great prominence. For the French press, regardless of their different ideological affinities, it was essential to stop the disaster and undertake protection and safeguard measures in this regard. So the immediate interest aroused by the Spanish war in French public opinion had a special section referring to this important loss of assets.

Rafael Rodríguez Tranche, Universidad Complutense de Madrid

Catedrático de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid. Como historiador y teórico de los medios audiovisuales ha publicado numerosos artículos en revistas especializadas y libros colectivos. Ha participado en diversos proyectos de investigación centrados en las relaciones entre la imagen y los sistemas políticos en España durante el siglo XX. Actualmente, es IP del proyecto de investigación I+D+i Fotoperiodismo y Transición española (1975-1982): la fijación y circulación de los acontecimientos a través de la prensa gráfica y su relectura memorística. Coautor, con Vicente Sánchez-Biosca, de NO-DO El tiempo y la memoria (Cátedra, 2001) y El pasado es el destino. Propaganda y cine del bando nacional en la Guerra Civil (Cátedra, 2011), ambas Premio Muñoz Suay de la Academia de Cine española. Sus últimas publicaciones son Del papel al plano. El proceso de la creación cinematográfica (Alianza Ed., 2015), La máscara sobre la realidad. La información en la era digital (Alianza Ed., 2019) y Más allá de la pantalla. Vórtice Val del Omar (Diputación de Granada, 2020).
