Europe as El Dorado vs. a Fortress
discourse analyses on Senegalese and Spanish mass media regarding the African and European migratory phenomena
Abstract
To demonstrate how the migratory phenomenon is constructed between Africa and Europe, and more specifically, between Senegal and Spain, we have made a critical analysis of the discourse in two media outlets in each country. We focused on how the media communicate about migrations, in the host, home or transit societies. Thus, we paid attention to the conformation of the existing collective thinking regarding the European continent. For example, ‘El Dorado’, the migrants’ desired destination where they think they will fulfill their original expectations that lead them to migrate; and ‘Fortressed Europe’, an unattainable destination. In this way, we intend to highlight recurring word patterns in the written news that depicts how the media presents migrations within these two polar opposite perceptions of migration.
