Periodistic frames of the repatriation of latin american migrants resident in Chile during the pandemic

Keywords: Return migration, voluntary repatriation, human rights, humanitarian crisis, journalistic coverage.

Abstract

The objective of the article is to analyze the journalistic coverage of the repatriation of Latin American migrants residing in Chile, forced by the social and economic effects of the health emergency caused by COVID-19. A qualitative content analysis is developed regarding the journalistic message between the months of April to July 2020, by identifying the communication frames used by four Chilean newspapers. The results show a trend towards the attribution of responsibility and the human interest of the news related to the migratory crisis caused by the pandemic, concluding that the identified frames describe the fragility of Latin American migrants in the face of the effects of the health crisis and the defenselessness suffered when they lost their jobs, evidencing violations of their human rights in both the host country and the countries of origin, making it necessary to implement transnational migration policies to support them in future humanitarian crises.
