The contribution of immigration to the Basque economy and its representation in the press
economic agents or economic “patients”? A multimodal approach
Abstract
This paper aims to analyse the visual representation of immigrants in the digital press in those news items associated with their contribution to the Basque economy. We focus on the news published between 21 and 29 May 2020 related to the results of the study La aportación económica de las personas de origen extranjero en la CAE a través del PIB (2018) (Fullaondo & Fierro, 2020). Taking the critical analysis of multimodal discourse as a perspective, we based ourselves on van Leeuwen's social actor theory (2008) and on the visual grammar proposed by Kress and van Leeuwen (2006) to see how visual resources depict people of foreign origin in a more negative way than linguistic ones, while reinforcing the "them/us" dichotomy.
