Has journalistic coverage of migrations in Spain changed?
Abstract
The objective of this research is to find out if, according to journalism professionals themselves, there has been any significant change in the coverage of migrants by the Spanish media in recent years and to probe whether – according to these expert opinions – these changes can persist over time. To address this goal, we have conducted semi-structured interviews with 15 reporters who have worked on this matter in recent years. The results indicate that journalists observe positive changes in the treatment of this information regarding the recent past. However, they also agree that these changes are minority (few media are committed to consolidating these improvements) and unstable: the urgency, lack of specialization and precariousness threaten their permanence in the future.
