Abstract

This article suggests a reflection from the “foreigner”, by Simmel (2005), and “marginal man”, by Park (2017), concepts in the construction of the journalistic discourse about the immigrant on the contemporary times. The objective is to verify how the conflict of the voices presents in texts published by the press have relevance of images of “us” and “the other” and how it appears in the traditional and community media. The methodology used is Discourse Analysis applied to journalistic articles about an attack against Bolivian immigrants in São Paulo, in 2019. We highlight that in establishing a relationship between “us” and “the other”, the discourse of the traditional media privileges differences, treats the immigrant as a stranger, who is not part of the local culture, being confined to the territories and marginal conditions. This image is deconstructed by the discourse produced by the communitarian media, which evidence migration act not as a continuum process, in subjective ways of transformation and innovation.
