News frames in the Spanish press
Analysis of the coverage of the Open Arms conflict in El País, El Mundo and ABC from the Framing perspective
Abstract
On August 1, 2019, a ship belonging to Spanish NGO Proactiva Open Arms rescues 123 migrants fleeing Libya in Mediterranean waters. The NGO requests asylum from Italy, but the transalpine government bans their landing. A diplomatic conflict breaks out between two EU countries, with deep significance for European migration policy, which sparked media attention.
This article addresses the study of the coverage carried out by the three main Spanish newspapers (El País, El Mundo y ABC), according to the guidelines of analysis introduced by the Framing Effect theories. The aim is to determine the different coordinates of the news frames used by these three journalistic brands, which will help us gauge their personalities and orientations.
