The construction of gender in TV movies aired on Spanish generalist television (2005-2018): Analysis and a proposed code of good practices
Abstract
The broadcasting of TV films in Spain over the last decade has increased exponentially. These 641 tv movies, mostly North American and German, demonstrate great relevance in their portrayal of women rooted in gender stereotypes. Whether family dramas, thrillers or chick flicks, the TV movies is clearly at odds with the female gender values of autonomy and equality. This study examines the ideological construction concealing TV films and women’s roles in the TV-film production. This study also seeks to ascertain the leading production companies of television films aired in Spain as delve into the business philosophy behind their output. Furthermore, we undertook a review of the Spanish channels that most frequently and profusely schedule TV movies. Finally, UNESCO's Gender Sensitive Indicators for Media (GSIM) were taken as a framework to propose a code of good practices to regulate the construction of gender of television films
