rom popular music to Brazilian Popular Music: a century of music and records in Brazil
Abstract
The paper relates the trajectory of the recording industry and popular music in Brazil throughout the 20th century, taking into account the interactions of the music industry with both the radio and television industries. Therefore, it was divided into four main periods: “From the talking machines in the tropics to the Casa Edison label, 1900-1930”, “the age of cinema and radio, 1930-1950”, “the bossa-nova and television, 1960-1970” and “in search of the popular, 1980-1990". The text highlights issues such as the economic concentration of the recording industry, and the development of a properly “Brazilian” musical repertoire, in which certain musical genres were more or less privileged according to the development of the recording industry itself.
