The dispute over the leadership of the PSOE in September 2016: Implicit contents and conceptual frameworks
Abstract
At the end of September of 2016, the Spanish Socialist Party (PSOE) went through one of its biggest internal crises since its foundation. The loss of parliamentary representation resulting from the emergence of new parties, the failed investiture of the then socialist leader, and the new election campaign that emphasized this loss of representation or its position as regards to the country's governance during the 12th parliamentary term are the context for the advent of this breach An analysis of the content in the press headlines brings to light the different strategies of ideological persuasion used to convey the political discourse. A study of the reference frames used by the various party representatives also reveals how the PSOE’s crisis evolved and shows the leadership problems underlying the language used by the party’s main actors.
