2018 Presidential elections in Colombia: analysis of the news coverage of Caracol and RCN
Abstract
The elections of 2018 in Colombia took place in the middle of a process of political transition in the post-conflict context where the continuity of peace agreements and the tension over new thematic agendas were at stake. This implied a scenario of uncertainty that was not alien to that also affected the media in the way in which they covered the electoral process. This article shows the results of the analysis made to 586 news of Caracol Noticias and Noticias RCN by the Media Observatory of the Universidad de la Sabana in partnership with the Electoral Observation Mission. The analysis shows a transformation in the thematic agenda, the persistence of polarization, the gender imbalance and the coexistence of traditional and new journalistic practices, surrounded by a scenario of political uncertainty that framed the electoral process.
