The listeria crisis in meat
Evolution of the dominant frames in elpais.com, lavanguardia.com and abc.es
Abstract
A health alert for listeriosis remained active, caused by the contamination of meat products from three Andalusian companies, during the two months between August 15 and October 17, 2019. The crisis transcended the Andalusian sphere and on August 22 Spain launched an international alert. This article analyzes the treatment that elpais.com, lavanguardia.com and abc.es gave to this crisis. The evolution of the dominant approaches in the 425 informative or interpretative texts that the three media published on the subject during the two months mentioned has been analyzed, base don the theory of framing. Likewise, Likewise, the authorship of the texts and the main sources of them have been studied. Although the most used frame is that of "Consequences" (30%), the so-called "Calm frame" - which seeks to soften the seriousness of the facts - appears 17% of the time.
