Ideological champions with international repercussions: the Spanish and Portuguese press during the state visit of Franco to Portugal
Abstract
General Franco has only done one state visit abroad: he visited Salazar’s Portugal in October 1949 with the objective of ending his international isolation. This work assesses the media coverage of this visit by four newspapers: ABC, Arriba, Diário de Notícias and Diário da Manhã. Both the Portuguese and Spanish press were subject to censorship and have contributed to main objective of this visit. In this work, these newspapers are compared, and a quantitative and qualitative analysis is provided. We have concluded a homogeneity of their narratives and of the supported leitmotiv. The Portuguese press has provided a more extensive coverage, and the oficial newspapers are presented as press for ideological combat.Downloads
