Abstract

Several studies show that women are underrepresented in the sports newspaper and that the media use a sexist discourse. The purpose of the present study is to analyze the representation of women in the Spanish sports newspaper during the Rio 2016, where male/female participation was quite balanced. For that, the information related to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games released by Marca, As and Mundo Deportivo has been analyzed from a quantitative perspective. The results reveal that, although men are the protagonists of sports information related to the Olympic Games, the amount of women related information was higher than expected. Most of this information was non-stereotyped, which make us think that the Olympic Games coverage represent an important the media tool to make the feminine sport visible. It is of great importance to follow this path during the rest of the sports competition throughout the year.
