Saint Seiya in the Classical Culture class of fourth year of Compulsory Secondary Education: a didactic proposal
Abstract
The purpose of this interdisciplinary project is to bring to our 4th-year secondary students of Classical Culture an awareness of Greek mythology and Homer's Iliad through Saint Seya (Knights of the Zodiac), an animated series based on the 1985 manga by Masami Kurumada. In a very personal reworking of the myth, the Japanese mangaka has adroitly brought back ancient Greek heroes. Taking The Iliad as his source of inspiration, Kurumada gives his own version of some of the theomachies or godly wars that take place, inter alia, in this epic poem. Our educational intervention aims at removing the barriers we sometimes build in the classroom between the rational and the emotional, the traditional and the modern.
