Interdiscursivity, Intertextuality and Plagiarism in the first modern Spanish “travel guide”. The Guia del viajero en España of Francisco de Paula Mellado
Abstract
Throughout the 19th century, the evolution of leisure travel led to the need for a kind of publication that responded to the traveler’s demand. In this context, Francisco de Paula Mellado published the Guía del viajero en España (1842), considered the first modern Spanish travel guide since already pointing out all the essential characteristics of this genre. The analysis of this successful manual highlights, in addition to a relationship of interdiscursivity with other text tipologies, a manifest intertextuality with and even plagiarism of several contemporary works.
