Abstract

The aim of the article is twofold. First, to review those mass media which have had a major role in transmitting countercultural values among the Spanish youth –namely, radio, TV, the underground press and the Internet-, especially in the last quarter of the 20th century. And second, to examine the main expressive devices which convey the “anti-language” reflecting the values of the youth population, especially of those subcultures which have stood out most clearly in their opposition to conventional society; these linguistic mechanisms are mnemotechnically described as “the 4 C’s” (or Changes): Change of signifier (by clipping, parasitic suffixation, deformation and substitution, and hypercharacterized spelling), Change of meaning (by way of metonym, metaphor, and antiphrasis), Change of code (by borrowing terms from marginal sociolects and from prestigious languages like English), and Change of register (by switching from euphemism to dysphemism)
