Tensions in co-creative systems. A critical look at the integration of design in Colombian artisan communities in the department of Santander
Abstract
Collaborative design between rural artisans and designers faces epistemological, cultural, and relational tensions arising from the interaction between empirical and academic knowledge, global demands versus cultural preservation, and power imbalances. These tensions, rather than being obstacles, present opportunities to transform co-creative design into a more inclusive and resilient system. This article examines how these frictions shape co-creation processes in the department of Santander, Colombia. Through interviews, participant observation, and document review, the study identifies the dynamics among actors, creative processes, and resulting outcomes.
The findings reveal that the implementation of hybrid methodologies facilitates the integration of local knowledge and contemporary tools, promoting a situated design approach. Additionally, the study emphasizes the importance of establishing collaborative agreements that ensure an equitable distribution of responsibilities and benefits. From a decolonial perspective, proposed strategies include strengthening trust networks, re-signifying artisanal trades, and implementing horizontal governance mechanisms. Finally, the article highlights leverage points for managing these tensions and consolidating co-creative systems that integrate tradition and innovation, fostering dialogue and resulting in sustainable and culturally significant products.
