The generative artificial intelligence of images as a collaborator for creativity: a group case study
Abstract
This research is positioned at the intersection of Generative AI, Torrance's dimensions of divergent thinking, and neurosurrealism. The general aim of the study is to understand whether students perceive AI collaboration as a tool to enhance their creative capacity and self-expression. Students engage in both handwritten and digital techniques to represent their dreams. The research employs a mixed-methods design with a sample of 55 students from two Spanish universities. In the category of visual exploration, the elaboration dimension is the highest rated (75.96%), followed by originality (55.1%). In contrast, neither fluency nor flexibility achieved a medium level of agreement, raising specific questions regarding the suitability of the tool. Regarding self-expression, the high level of satisfaction reached (72.4%) is associated with the ability to express themselves visually by overcoming the "blank canvas" fear and alleviating the insecurities arising from their lack of experience in representing an idea. Finally, limitations are discussed, including the sample size and ethical challenges in AI-generated artistic creations.
