Chinese Colour Term Qing and Its Synonyms
Abstract
This paper will review the evolution of Chinese colour term qing throughout history in order to corroborate that qing in the ancient times can also include green, blue, black and ocasionally other cool and neutral colours and this is the result of the peculiar way in which the Chinese ancestors conceive and structure linguistically the colours; secondly the paper will analyse and compare the lexico-semantic aspects of qing and its synonyms in order to demonstrate that qing, as basic colour term in the ancient times of China, is widely used and from it the no basic terms are derived and composed; by the end, this paper will make a review on the words and expressions formed with qing and its numerous connotations in order to prove the importance that this colour means both to the language and the culture of the Chinese community, although it’s no longer basic colour term any more.
