About a Recent Acquisition of the Reina Sofía National Art Center Museum (Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía): Dama recostada (c. 1990-2003) by María Dolores Casanova
Abstract
In May 2022, the work of María Dolores Casanova Dama recostada was acquired by the Reina Sofía National Art Center Museum. With this, the painter receives posthumous recognition for her extensive pictorial production, while the museum fulfills its declared commitment to make visible the art made by women, in order to replace the patriarchal, colonial and hegemonic memorialist views of modernity by feminist, decolonial and ecological approaches. This research consists of a rigorous and in-depth study of the piece. Its detailed examination from the thematic field will allow it to be inscribed in the pictorial genre of the self-portrait, while the formal and iconographic analysis will confirm its belonging to the third stylistic stage of its production, which is between 1990 and 2003, with which a chronology will be established of it and the modality of self-portrait to which it belongs will be determined, of the three of different typology that the artist cultivated.
