The Language of Pictures: Drawing and its Meanings in Art Education History
Abstract
During the 1970s, the school subject of Drawing began to adopt new names in much of the Western world. This article analyzes the historical coordinates that defined the semantic mutations of the term 'drawing', from its inclusion in school programs in the 19th century to its practical disappearance in the last third of the 20th. The research is based on the consultation of a huge corpus of pedagogical treatises and school manuals published in Europe and the United States throughout the indicated period, together with a no less numerous list of historiographical contributions. The text is structured chronologically in eight sections, plus an epilogue in which the author discusses the uses of the word in the sphere of education and learning today and the role its actually starts to play.
