The Delta del Po in the italian cinematography of the 40's and 50's: Visconti, Rossellini, De Santis, Antonioni and Casadio
Abstract
This paper analyzes the relationships between landscape and cinema. It is about five authors confronted with the same place. World Heritage of Humanity (UNESCO), the Po Delta has emerged as the ideal Genius Loci for Italian cinematography during 1940s and 1950s. Most famous directors of the moment succumbed to the natural beauty and scenery of its surroundings when they chose location for their first films. All of them interpreted the marsh landscape in a particular and different way. From the gaze of the best author cinema, Visconti, Rossellini, De Santis, Antonioni and Casadio will immortalize the palude padana in five works of unbeatable artistic execution. It was all about that rough, simple and idyllic Po Delta, preceding the enviromentally hazardous industrial conversion carried out in Italy in the 1960s.
