The beginnings of the process of returning the Guernica to Spain (1968-1971): The work of the Director of the State Office of Fine Arts, Florentino Perez-Embid
Abstract
This article examines the efforts of Florentino Pérez-Embid, Director of the Academy of Fine Arts, to return Picasso's Guernica to Spain. I discuss, first, the government's negotiations to bring the painting from New York to Madrid. Given Picasso's refusal to move the painting, other unofficial channels were explored, though these were not successful, as were other attempts. This essay analyzes the process using unedited documents from Perez-Embid's personal archive, housed at the Archivo General of the University of Navarra
