Visual utopia and graphic representation. A historical approach to his architectural imaginary.

Keywords: drawing, representation, architecture, utopia

Abstract

The images currently produced are the result of merging reality, the limits of the collective and individual imagination, and the vagaries of illusion. Within the world of representation, some images benefit from a mental world based on subjectivity, fantasy and imagination. They are visual utopias that escape the limits of reason and are apart from reality. This article aims to muse about visual utopias in modernity, distinguishing between graphic and architectural utopias. The first ones, generated with a speculative purpose, and the latter, elaborated with the secret hope of their materialization, although this is, to say the least, improbable. The development of these concepts is carried out using concrete historical examples from a pre-digital era.
