Culture as an instrument of well-being and social inclusion: evaluation of the impact of the program Center for the Contemporary Culture of Barcelona – Alzheimer
Abstract
This paper presents a research developed at the Centre for the Contemporary Culture of Barcelona (CCCB) to understand the impact of it’s Alzheimer program. Mixed research methodology has been developed, although a qualitative research from an hermeneutic paradigm has been privileged. The quantitative research has been based on the Non Pharmacological Therapy Scale. The qualitative research has been developed through focus groups; a questionnaire; and field diaries based on participatory observation during the visits. The research shows that the program has had a positive impact on the cognitive and emotional wellbeing of participants as well as in the social participation. It is remarkable the positive impact in dimensions as evocation of memories, enjoying the novelty, or social participation that breaks the situation of isolation/and exclusion. The research shows a positive impact on caregivers; family members; educators; and the institution itself, in the context of a movement of centers of culture and museums towards inclusion. The culture is a powerful tool for the wellbeing and social participation of the persons with Alzheimer.
